One Historic Trail Leads to the Cariboo’s Rich Past
A bounty of treasures, and wealth beyond belief, lured more than one adventurer to BC’s Cariboo Chilcotin. Dust-riddled and determined, these trail blazers tested their grit against an unforgiving land…all in search of gold. Today, the great rush of prospectors may be a thing of the past, but the trails they fashioned remain. Eager to trace some historical footprints? Let the aptly-named Whitegold Adventures show you the way. Armed with modern tools of the trade – plus a little guidance and skill – explorers can hit the 1861 Gold Rush Pack Trail on a three-day guided trek. This trail found its fame thanks to “Doc” Keithly who, in 1860, hiked over the Cariboo Mountains to start the biggest Gold Rush in BC history. One short year after this journey, the trail he blazed was marked with cabins, sawmills, roadhouses, towns and even a horse race track – all to meet the growing needs of a mining community of over 1,200. Today, an expedition along this path will lead adventurers along alpine ridges, and fields of wild flowers, not to mention the decaying remains of the Gold Rush heyday. Your route makes its way along mountain routes the likes of Snowshoe Plateau and Breakneck, Antler and Horseshoe Ridges, where your guide combines a sweep of the landscape with a tantalizing recollection of ghosts of treasured past. Stunning scapes, memorable hikes and a bit of backcountry flair will ensure this is one journey not soon forgotten. And when the adventure ends, appropriately, in the bustling former mining town of Barkerville, you’ll feel as if you’ve struck it rich – thanks to a trail that pledges treasures of an entirely different sort. www.whitegold.ca
