Ten Ways to Deal With Flying Anxiety

By Carrie Christian

Flying causes a good portion of the population anxiety. Yet sometimes, flying is the only option. If you’ve got to get across the country to say a last goodbye to a dying parent, you may have to confront your fears.

Here are ten tips for how to reduce flight-related anxiety in the days before an essential flight:

1.) Don’t listen to news reports on airline catastrophes or watch movies which feature hijackings or crashes. Your subconscious mind registers these messages of fear and you will become increasingly tense about your upcoming flight.

2.) Think of your travel day as a nice break from your ordinary routine. Think about the good things associated with travel. For instance, you don’t have a long drive. The airport security is there to protect you.

3.) Give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport, go through security, and get on the plane. Nothing will make you tenser than having to rush.

4.) Eat a nutritious and solid meal. If you have food in your stomach, it will counteract any acidity caused by your food and thus reduce motion sickness.

5.) Keep busy in the air. Buy a new book you’ve been dying to read. Take along a book of Sodoku puzzles. Fill up your iPod with calming music.

6.) Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Keep in mind that alcohol and products with caffeine dehydrate you.

7.) Sleep. If you can sleep on a plane the trip will go faster.

8.) From time to time get up and walk around the plane to stretch your legs (as long as the seatbelt light is off).

9.) Keep in mind that temperatures will vary and plan your clothes accordingly. Wear layers of clothing.

10.) Keep your ears clear during takeoff and landing by pinching your nose and blowing through your fingers, chewing gum, or popping the ears by opening and closing the mouth.

These 10 tips will help you reduce your Flying Anxiety the next time you have to get on a plane.
