Vancouver Island Worships Pearls from the Sea

While November promises cooler climates, it also ushers in a celebration of the abundance and beauty of the ocean’s deep: Vancouver Island’s Clayoquot Oyster Festival - a month-long palate-pleasing roster of festivities meant to celebrate Crossostrea Gigas.  Yeah, that’s right.  Oysters.  Seems fitting for a region which harvests over 50,000 gallons of these saltwater jewels annually to throw a little shin dig to commemorate the occasion.  And celebrate they do with an array of shucking and slurping opportunities meant to showcase the Pacific oyster.  While these tasty and healthy (bonus!) morsels can be seen showcased in menus throughout the Island, November 20 – 22 will draw the crowds for a bit of merriment during the 12th annual festival in Tofino.  Situated on the Island’s wild west coast, locals and visitors alike will break out the moves during the costume party-themed Mermaid’s Ball, pull on the woollies and check out the cold water treasures during the Oyster’s Afloat Farm Tours and even don dressy duds to close the weekend at the Oyster Gala.  Local chefs take centre stage – along with plenty of live music – during the gala event, crafting some of their finest oyster-filled morsels for guests to sample and rank for a favoured peoples’ pick.  Still haven’t had your fill?  The Mermaid Ball’s Annual Slurping Contest will match competitors and oyster-lovers alike for a shot at gulping glory.  Whether you indulge in a weekend of amusement, or a month-long quest for the most satisfying Crossostrea Gigas, make November your month on the Island.  www.oystergala.com
