When you visit Puerto Rico’s Isla Verde Beach, it will remind you of other world-class beaches like Brazil’s Ipanema and Honolulu’s Waikiki. This tourist hotspot is upscale, fashionable and the perfect place to people watch. Translated in English as “Green Island”, Isla Verde, however, is not of an island but actually sits on the northeastern coast of Puerto Rico. For many years, it has been considered one of the best municipal beaches in the capital San Juan. It is the kind of place that exudes a festive and very urban atmosphere. Here, you will see plenty of luxurious hotels and enjoy a series a beachfront restaurants and cafes.
Isla Verde generally features a light tan-hued sand and calm aquamarine-colored waters. However, the name itself refers not only to one crescent-shaped sandy stretch but a series of beaches that cover several miles. This includes some of the most luxurious beachfront communities and resorts in San Juan. The buildings behind Isla Verde are well-complemented by a row of tall palm trees that give the beach a more natural look. Just adjacent to Isla Verde is another stunning stretch called Carolina Beach. Should you decide to visit here, you will experience the same amenities and services you usually receive at Isla Verde.
Aside from the usual sunbathing and swimming, there are plenty of things to do while on Isla Verde. There is a popular beach shop here that offers several water-based activities such as parasailing, waterskiing, jet skiing, Hobie Cat tours, body boarding and banana boat rides. These activities can run for half a day or even the entire day, depending on your preference.
If you like diving, it is also possible to sign up for a diving excursion that will bring you 30 to 45 minutes offshore to waters with high visibility. One of the most popular nearby dive sites is Cayo Diablo, which is part of a small archipelago on the east coast. On dry land, you can go for an intense game of volleyball or do nothing, which is not a bad idea if you are on a gorgeous beach like Isla Verde. Because of the presence of hotels and shops on the beach, there is always some event or show that is going on, on Isla Verde but you get used to it given the beautiful surroundings.
As expected, this beach is very busy during weekends, holidays and summer. Thus, if you plan to visit during this period, make sure that you book your accommodation and arrange tour and activities ahead of time. Nightlife at Isla Verde is simply rocking. Aside from the wide selection of restaurants, spas and entertainment centers, there are also a number of bars and nightclubs.
