The Wild Waves of Jeffreys Bay – South Africa

Its breaks are so impressive that it has become the annual host for the Billabong Pro ASP World Tour Surfing event.

Because of a strong surfing community, the bay has earned a reputation as a paradise of sunshine, fun and adventure. Fondly called J-Bay by locals and frequent visitors, the bay is also known for its white sand beaches and sea shells.

Jeffreys Bay is a place of diversity and creativity. The bay area encompasses a vibrant town of the same name. Everywhere, you will see a wide range of shops that showcase the artistic talents of local craftsmen. There are also plenty of restaurants, cafes and takeaways to choose from. From hotels to backpacker guesthouses, the town offers a number of options when it comes to accommodation. Two of the most interesting structures to visit while in this vicinity are the Jeffreys Bay Surf Museum and Jeffreys Bay Shell Museum. The serene Shell Museum features collections of the exquisite shells that were found on the beaches in the bay area and from all over the world.

Another popular and unique activity for adventurous souls is the stand up paddle. If you would like to try this exciting fun sport, stop by some of the shops around Jeffrey’s Bay that offer lessons as well as equipment rentals. For fishing aficionados, deep sea fishing excursions are also regularly offered by tour companies. If you want to stay dry, why not try a game of golf at bay’s 9-hole course.

JBay is also an access point to many interesting attractions in the region. Some of the points of the interests in close proximity to the bay include the picturesque St. Francis Bay, the Seal Point Lighthouse, Port St. Francis harbor, Oyster Bay, Marina Martinique and the Kabeljous river valley. Another nearby must-see landmark is the Seekoei River Nature Reserve, a fascinating sanctuary that cares for a wide range of bird species. Jeffrey’s Bay is approximately an hour’s drive away from Port Elizabeth, which operates an airport facilitating daily international flights
