Looking for a great surfing spot in a remote region in the world? Why not head out to Southeast Asia, particularly the group of islands, which has gained quite a reputation when it comes to generating some of the best surfing breaks in the world. Located just off the coast of Sumatra, the Mentawai Islands of Indonesia has a great abundance of huge waves coming from the Indian Ocean. Here, surfing can be done all year long, and the waves cater to surfers of various abilities.

There are many notable surfing spots to choose from once you reach the island. Arguably, the top spot goes to Beng Beng, because of its consistent world class waves. Situated in a very scenic small bay, it is one of the easiest waves to ride in the region. This is because it has more swells but the waves are deep enough so you won’t stumble upon sharp corals. There are also other breaks found around Beng Beng’s vicinity, which is situated in a very scenic small bay. The breaks called E-bay, Nipussi or Pussies and Pitstops, are all very fun and exciting if you are a more experienced surfer.
Since the Mentawai Islands are quite remote, getting here is not quite straightforward. However, once you are here, it is just so easy to catch a wave and relax on the beach. To get to the islands, you can take one of the several surf charter yachts typically docked at the Padang harbor, on the mainland of Sumatra. Another alternative is to take a comfortable ferry service called Ferry Ambu Ambu to Mentawai. This ferry has varied schedule depending on the day; so make sure you do the necessary planning so you catch the service at the right time. If you have the budget, you can also opt to fly to the islands by seaplane.
Visitors do not visit Mentawai Islands just to surf as there are other interesting activities worth doing here too. Even though it’s not very far from the mainland, Mentawai has kept its traditional culture and natural gifts. The biggest island in the chain is called Siberut. Aside from being the place where most of Mentawai residents live, Siberut is also known for its tropical rainforests and abundant biological habitats. In fact, it is a designated UNESCO biosphere reserve, and the western section of the island is protected as a national park.

All of these characteristics make the island an amazing spot for trekking and wildlife-watching activities. Trekking on this island exposes you to amazing jungle settings, lush vegetations and swamps. Another popular thing to do while on Mentawai is to visit the indigenous tribes in the area, and learn more about their culture, which they have managed to preserve for many decades. Snorkeling and diving expeditions around the island’s waters are also common.
There is a good range of accommodation around Mentawai. There are a number of resorts that cater to surfers and vacationing tourists who seek tranquility and comfort. For budget travelers, there are also guesthouses and local family homes that provide accommodation for much cheaper rates. To get around the islands, you can rent out one of the locals’ traditional boats or go for an organized tour.
